Tuesday 30th June, 2009 (IANS)

A 40-year-old man Tuesday allegedly committed suicide by jumping off from the second floor of a hospital in south Delhi, police said, even as his family alleged he was killed.

'The deceased, Revti Prasad, a patient with multiple organ failure including that of the kidney, was admitted to the Batra hospital Saturday. This afternoon, a nurse discovered that he was not on the bed,' a senior police officer said.

'He was found lying on the ground floor after which the hospital authorities informed us. No suicide note was recovered from the spot,' the police officer said.

Prasad, a driver by profession, was from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. His family members, however, alleged it was not a suicide.

'He was too weak and was not even able to walk properly. How could he walk and jump to death? Where were the hospital authorities when the incident took place? We are sure that they would have made a mistake in his treatment which prompted them to kill him,' said a close relative of Prasad.

But the police officer said: 'He was poor and may be he was under severe depression because of financial problems due to the treatment at a prominent hospital. But we are looking at all possible angles and would go to the depth of the case.'

Police have registered a case and investigations are on.
