College principal, wife, doctor son arrested for girl's suicide

The principal of a Tripura government college, his wife and his son, a doctor, were arrested Tuesday after the doctor's girlfriend committed suicide, a police official here said.
'We have arrested principal Nepal Chandra Das, his wife Anita and their doctor son Soumya for allegedly provoking the latter's fiance to commit suicide,' said Seema Biswas, an official of the Agartala women police station.
Twenty-year-old college student Misti Das, daughter of another government college principal, committed suicide here last week.
The victim's family lodged a complaint with the police alleging that she was forced to commit suicide.
'We want severe punishment for Soumya and his father as my daughter was provoked to commit suicide by them,' said Misti's father Gopalmani Das, principal of Amarpur government college in south Tripura.
Soumya is a doctor at the medical college here while his father Nepal Chandra Das is the principal of Bir Bikram Memorial college, a 100-year-old government college in Agartala.
Father of two girls, Gopalmani said : 'Soumya and Misti had a love affair. Recently Soumya refused to marry Misti.'
The police produced them in the chief judicial magistrate's court. Nepal Chandra Das and Soumya were sent to 12-days' judicial custody while bail was granted to Anita.
Moved by the incident, Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Anil Sarkar, a poet, composed a poem on the incident and the tragic end of a love affair.
