List of low-budget hotels drawn for Commonwealth Games
New Delhi News.Net Thursday 24th January, 2008 (IANS)
The union tourism ministry is preparing a list of lodges and small hotels in the national capital region (NCR) for low-budget travellers coming here for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Union Tourism Secretary Shilabhadra Banerjee told reporters Thursday that a list of 200 units, which can provide bed and breakfast to the tourists, has already been prepared. 'These will provide around 600 rooms,' he said.
'We are looking for more units which can provide such facilities in the NCR region of Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida and Faridabad,' Banerjee said.
The Commonwealth Games are expected to attract a huge crowd of people who would prefer low-budget facilities. 'The aim is to provide them home-stay kind of facility,' a senior official said.
Since Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned from his recent visit to China, which is hosting the Olympics in August this year, he has taken the Commonwealth Games preparations more seriously, according to official sources. 'He was impressed with the professionalism of the Chinese,' said an official.
In comparison to the China, Indian preparations have been moving at a snail's pace. A series of steps are likely to be taken in which ministry of urban development, sports and tourism, among others, will to be involved.
Banerjee said that 'close review' of the preparations is being taken and constant communication is being maintained to quicken the pace of the measures to be taken.
